BLT’s Climate Conversations Series Spotlights Hot Topics
A series of cool programs celebrating National Environmental Awareness Month (September) West Barnstable, MA – As part of National Environmental Awareness Month this September, Barnstable Land Trust (BLT) will explore climate-related topics through walks and talks including art, literature, and science programs through its second annual Climate Conversations series. Working with 10+ community partners, month-long highlights include a film screening and discussion on climate changes on Morris Island (Chatham) combined with a presentation on the relocation of the Sandy Neck Beach parking lot, a climate change trail hike through Woods Hole, a homeowner’s workshop on getting climate-ready, extreme weather presentations (“Clouds and Climate” and “Wild Weather”), an outdoor Native American nature poetry program, a bog restoration walk, a historical landscape exploration, a hands-on Tree Planting 101 session with an arborist, and more. A full calendar of events, resources, and more information can be found at https://blt.org/climate-conversations . “Climate scientists have known for decades that global warming is happening. Now we are seeing it in action on our peninsula and elsewhere. In fact, it has been determined that the temperature of the Atlantic Ocean around Cape Cod is warming at a rate three times faster than the global average (Source: EPA).” says Janet Milkman, Executive Director of Barnstable Land Trust. “As historic floods, massive forest fires, extreme temperatures, and warming sea waters become the new normal, talking about climate change has never been more important. Through a wide variety of collaborative programming, we hope BLT’s second annual Climate Conservations will inspire people both on and off the trails about the value of nature-based solutions.” BLT’s Climate Conversations series is sponsored in part by Solar Rising, a Cape Cod based full service solar installation company. A special thanks to our other Climate Conversation partners: Town of Barnstable (Arts|Barnstable, Natural Resources/Sandy Neck, and the Planning and Development departments), CCB Media, Resilient Woods Hole, Osterville Village Library, Barnstable Clean Water Coalition, Sturgis Library, Osterville Village Library, Woods Hole Sea Grant and Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the Saint John Paul II School. Barnstable Land Trust (BLT) is a community-supported, nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving open space and natural resources in the Town of Barnstable and nearby areas. BLT has protected over 1,250 acres in the Town of Barnstable and supported the Town in conserving over 11,000 more. Recognized as a regional leader in collaborative land preservation and stewardship, community engagement, training, and advocacy, BLT leverages its conservation expertise to inform local public decisions as they impact our ecosystems, community health, well-being, and quality of life.
